As a cat lover I was immediately attracted to this book. I thought it would be a nice and easy read. It was not.The highly sensitive author describes her battles with depression in such a way that, as a reader, you want her to pop out of the pages so you can give her a big bear hug and ensure her that life is not that bad after all.
The book is also thought provoking. One of the reasons for her depression is that she does not succeed in finding the perfect partner. As Marie says:
"The problem, I truly believe, lays with society. We are conditioned as young girls to believe and expect in the happy-ever-after of fairytale land. We are read and fed fairytales to make us happy, to make us believe life is beautiful and nothing can possibly go wrong for us. There will always be a Prince Charming available to whisk us away. We don't have to worry about anything else, because once he comes, we are happy for life." I completely agree with her.
Although her depression plays a big role in this book, it is not a totally sad book. Uplifting are the chapters that were written by her cats. Especially good is the last part, in which Marie decides to study animal communication and writes about her wish to start a cat sanctuary. It left me feeling that in the end all will be well. But I still think Marie deserves that big hug, for telling us so honestly about her life. And as a reminder that other people may not be so highly sensitive, but that she can reach them through her writing!

Lovely emotional book. I also love her blog!
This is a wonderful book. So beautifully written. Marie Symeou is so honest in her portrayal of her life, and about the amazing and transformational bond she has had with her cats.
I decided to read this book because it is about cats. The book is much more than that. The author is brutally honest and very courageous in sharing the darkest parts of her life. As a fellow author, I could identify with many parts of this book. Being an author and selling books is not an easy business. I especially enjoyed the chapters of the book written by the author's cats. Like Ms. Symeou, I enjoy reading and writing memoirs. I am working on a book about my childhood cats and the author inspired me to finish my project. This book is well written and from the heart. The most important message the book conveys is how important animals are in our lives. They bring us comfort and hope in our darkest hours. Save a life - adopt a shelter animal!
Marie candidly bares her soul in this beautiful memoir which is also a tribute to the cats who have shared her life thus far. She describes her battle with alcohol, her self esteem issues and the hurt and rejection caused by an absent father. She somehow manages to do this without pointing fingers at anyone, this is simply life as she has experienced it and how she deals with it. I find her enormously brave, not only for being so open and honest but also because of her strength of character in taking responsibility for her own problems despite the setbacks - not of her own making - she has faced. Her courage shines through and I think anyone going through a tough time emotionally will find this book inspiring and helpful. Marie's message to all the hurting people out there is "hey, you aren't alone, we all go through tough times and it's okay." What really stood out for me is Marie's close bond with the cats that share her life and how they have helped her to cope.
